SisterGoods: Fighting Period Poverty

A menstrual product fundraiser with the Utah food bank because we believe they are a necessity not a luxury! Millions of women in the U.S suffer isolation, infection, and missed opportunities because they are unable to afford tampons and pads. Yet these women cannot use SNAP (food stamps) and Medicaid benefits to purchase menstrual products. Moreover, 30 states including Utah tax tampons as a luxury good. The consequences are heartbreaking: 23% of U.S. students struggle to afford period products. Nearly one in five American girls have missed school due to period poverty. In one study, two-thirds of low-income women couldn’t afford menstrual products. 36% missed work each month as a result. At SisterGoods, we believe menstrual products are a necessity, not a luxury. We are partnering with the Utah Food Bank to offer menstrual products at their pantries.  Your donation will help us fight period poverty – and give Utah women more opportunities to learn, work, and thrive. Collatoral material for you to use at events and fundraisers: A menstrual product fundraiser with the Utah Food bank because we consider…

SisterGoods

My amazing friend Emily McCormick has been working tirelessly to get rid of the tampon tax in Utah. She has given us some great information to contact our legislators to tell them we care about this and we want change. Drives and fundraisers are needed and helpful but reaching out and supporting policy can be even more important. Please see sample letter below that you can easily use to email or refer to in a call. HOW TO CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATOR—The Utah legislature is in session and there is a bill to eliminate the tax on menstrual products (HB 0204). We need your help contacting your Representatives and Senators to get this passed! You don’t need to be an expert in order to reach out to legislators. They represent YOU! You just need to care enough to raise awareness.  TIPS FOR COMMUNICATING WITH LEGISLATORS: *Let them know you are a constituent (live in their district). Because they represent YOU, they are accountable for caring for the things important to you. *Be brief. Whether writing, calling or visiting—keep it short and to…

New England Style Clambake

As always, I didn’t go by the book or any recipe for my clam bake. All of the ingredients are supposed to go in one pot and cook together but I really wanted the Traeger touch and a lot of flavor on all of the delicious seafood. This dinner is not just about food it is an experience and a labor of love. Add or subtract anything you like and make it your own. Here is what I did and the key… GARLIC BUTTER! Potatoes and Corn on the cob boiled in the wine, seafood stock, butter, and garlic mixture then put on the grill for 5-10 minutes to crisp up. Lobster tail (all seafood from Costco)on the grill for 15 minutes then brushed with garlic butter. Crab left chilled with drawn butter, cocktail sauce, and tarter sauce on the table. Tiger Shrimp brushed with garlic butter and chili lime seasoning from Trader Joes and grilled until pink (don’t overcook). Clams and muscles – both were put in a casserole dish with butter, wine, lemon juice, and garlic. Grill until…
