My amazing friend Emily McCormick has been working tirelessly to get rid of the tampon tax in Utah. She has given us some great information to contact our legislators to tell them we care about this and we want change. Drives and fundraisers are needed and helpful but reaching out and supporting policy can be even more important. Please see sample letter below that you can easily use to email or refer to in a call.

HOW TO CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATOR—
The Utah legislature is in session and there is a bill to eliminate the tax on menstrual products (HB 0204). We need your help contacting your Representatives and Senators to get this passed!
You don’t need to be an expert in order to reach out to legislators. They represent YOU! You just need to care enough to raise awareness.

TIPS FOR COMMUNICATING WITH LEGISLATORS: *Let them know you are a constituent (live in their district). Because they represent YOU, they are accountable for caring for the things important to you. *Be brief. Whether writing, calling or visiting—keep it short and to the point. *Be personal. Personal stories or explanations as to why menstrual health matters to YOU, is the most effective tool in communicating the need for change in policy. *Have a CLEAR ask. Make sure your representative knows specifically what you’re asking for. “Would you be willing to remove the tax on menstrual products?”
CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS!  *Visit in person or via Zoom *Email
*Text (Often legislators have their personal cell phone number listed on their contact page at www.le.utah.gov)  *Call
*Write a Letter

QUICK TIP: Everyone has two state legislators–a Representative (member of the Utah House of Representatives) and a Senator (member of the Utah Senate). Make sure to contact both!

SAMPLE LETTER OR TEXT:
Hello Representative (NAME),
My name is (NAME) and I am a constituent of yours. I recently learned about Utah’s tax on menstrual products and want you to know that I am supportive of HB0204 to eliminate the tax on menstrual products. Menstrual products are a necessity to half of the population. (PERSONAL STORY) As a woman, I have had times where it’s been difficult to access products and it can be terribly embarrassing. Please do all you can to increase access to menstrual products in our state in order to help our women and girls.
Thank you for all you do!
